Cause For Canonisation

Please read the current issue of the Fulton J. Sheen Society Inc. Newsletter for the latest update on the cause for the canonization of Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

On the twentieth anniversary of the death of Archbishop Sheen, Cardinal O'Connor of New York authorized a private investigation by the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation with a view to opening his cause. This has been led by Father Andrew Apostoli as postulator.

On August 15, 2002, the Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, the newly appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Peroria, Illinois, Bishop Daniel Jenky, CSC gave permission to the Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation to announce the Cause for Canonization of Archbishop Sheen was officially opened. In October official recognition of the opening was confirmed by the Vatican. The Vatican has approved a petition from the Diocese of Peoria for the opening of the cause for canonization of Archbishop Sheen within weeks of its official opening in the United States. The approval was granted by Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes.

"The process is a procedural one, by which a bishop may petition the Cause for the Congregation of the Saints in Rome after the bishop feels the candidate is competent and has met the preliminary qualifications for nomination. The principal reason for the opening is to allow the foundation to collect details on Archbishop Sheen which becomes evidence and testimony to be presented to the committee in Rome"
